Describe your business. TheRaceway.biz is a model car raceway built around the model car racing. In the store we have five tracks to cater to a variety of interests: 1/24 scale road, oval or drag racing, 1/32 scale road racing and H.O. scale road racing. We have several weekly racing programs and host dozens of regional events each year. You don’t have to be a full-blown enthusiast to take advantage of our services, as we have rentals available. Hosting race-themed birthday parties is also an important part of our business.
What’s your professional background? My professional background is pretty much model car Racing. I opened my first store (in Cape Canaveral) in 1982 and have been the retail end since. I have moved the store to several locations around central Brevard and have been on Sarno Road for the last four years. In 1984, I also began manufacturing a line of accessories and offering OEM services to several manufacturers in the industry.
Your business philosophy: Make sure the customer has fun. Make sure the facility is well-lit and nicely decorated.
Business Spotlight: Gentlemen’s Choice Family Barber
Biggest challenge: The biggest challenge to every raceway owner is finding an affordable way to let everyone know where we are and what services we offer. The Internet has been a huge help in that area. TheRaceway.biz sends out a weekly electronic newsletter to nearly 500 enthusiasts every Monday. Anyone who would like to be on the mailing lists can call, e-mail or drop by to provide their e-mail address. We also maintain a Facebook page.
Proudest moment as a businessperson: I am particularly pleased to be able to say I’ve been doing this for nearly 33 years. Since starting in 1982, I have seen 17 other raceways open and close in Brevard County.
Business Spotlight: The Local Experience
Business advice: My advice to each new raceway owner has always been: STOP RACING! Concentrate on the promotional end of the business and make sure you always have everything in stock that your customers need to keep their racing program on track.
What’s next? What are your future plans for your business? My constant emphasis is on better utilization of our nearly 3,000-square-foot facility and expanding the party aspect of the business.
